Barlovento is testament that the recently passed liquor laws are making Sydney a better place to live and dine in. Taking up a handkerchief-sized space on the Bondi Tamarama borderline street of Fletcher, this quaint little venue is kicking goals and winning hearts all over the east. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights see the walls popping its buttons with trendy locals who, like most of this here city, are embracing the fundamentals of tasting plates and good wine. Giving equal emphasis to both food and drink, the menu is pleasantly succinct, keeping in theme with this petite hotspot. Peer through the red velvet-draped windows, and you’ll be sure to see the guys responsible for running these evenings chatting to patrons over the bar, shaking up cocktails or describing the intricacies of a new bottle of vino. Candles and sultry lighting effuse the bar-lined room where guests perch, nibbling on meaty olives. Every dish is served upon a wooden board and designed with sharing in mind. Pizzas are made using thin tortilla bread and topped with quality delicacies such as fetta, salami and olive oil. Alternatively, create your own charcuterie plate with a selection of cured meats and exotic cheeses. Spanish jamon, chorizo and pancetta marry wonderfully with the slices and wedges on offer; not to mention the wine.
